United Nations Committee Against Torture

United Nations Committee Against Torture (and cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment)This United Nations Committee monitors compliance with the International Convention on Torture (which includes a section on cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment).  New Zealand is a party to this treaty.  In considering New Zealand's compliance with this Convention the Committee recently recommended that New Zealand comply with the recommendation made by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and prohibit all forms of corporal punishment.  For further information see www.acya.org.nz.  This is the first time that the UN Committee on Torture has commented on corporal punishment and the recommendation has important implications for other countries (including the United States) which have signed this international treaty.
